With the Lord

Rev. Virgil R. Brisco, July 8, 1920–November 5, 2011. Born in Corning, N.Y., Virgil served as a master sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. He attended the Missionary Training Institute (now Nyack [N.Y.] College) and married Elizabeth (Betty) Jean. During more than 46 years of C&MA service, Virgil pastored churches in Tulsa, Okla.; Kingston and Rochester, N.Y.; Ambridge, Pa.; and in the Albany-Schenectady (N.Y.) area. He devoted his retirement to evangelistic work, ministering in various Northeastern and Southeastern district churches. Virgil was predeceased by his wife; he is survived by sons Virgil Jr., Fred, Brisk and Donnie; daughter Joy; 12 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchild.

Ruth H. Mascaro, October 2, 1919–December 15, 2011. Born in Philadelphia, Pa., Ruth graduated from Frankford High School in 1937. She met Rev. Augustine (Augie) J. Mascaro at a church youth gathering; they married on May 13, 1939, in Philadelphia, Pa. The Mascaros served Alliance churches in Greensboro and Moffet Mine, Pa. Augie then worked in the maintenance department at Nyack (N.Y.) College while serving as a minister at the Alliance Church in West New York, N.J. In 1951 the Mascaros returned to Pennsylvania and served in various ministries at the Flourtown (Pa.) Alliance Church. Ruth served as a regional trainer and troop leader in the Girl Scouts. She also was a cafeteria worker in the Centennial School District. She loved being a homemaker, doing handicrafts and spending time with family and friends. Ruth was predeceased by her husband; she is survived by sons Augustine Jr., Kenneth, Richard, Robert and Ronald; daughter Marilyn; 15 grandchildren; and 23 great grandchildren.

LeRoy M. Toth, December 2, 1924–December 22, 2011. Born in St. Paul, Minn., LeRoy accepted Christ at age 17. While attending Simpson Memorial Church in St. Paul, LeRoy served on the board and sang in the choir and quartets. From 1943–1945, he served in the U.S. Navy. On June 21, 1945, he married Evelyn at Simpson Memorial Church. For 27 years, LeRoy worked for an insurance company, where he became vice president. His 25 years of C&MA ministry began after the business was sold and all the officers were let go. While serving on the Board of Trustees at St. Paul Bible College (now Crown College, St. Bonifacius, Minn.), LeRoy was hired as director of business affairs. He served in that capacity for more than 11 years and then worked as a C&MA stewardship representative. LeRoy is survived by his wife; sons Robert and David; 5 grandchildren; and 7 great grandchildren.

Rev. Ralph E. Godwin, May 28, 1923–December 23, 2011. A native of Fort Worth, Tex., Ralph grew up in Savannah, Ga., and attended the Missionary Training Institute (now Nyack [N.Y.] College), Rollins College (Winter Park, Fla.) and New York (N.Y.) University. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army, caring for the wounded in North Africa and India. In 1951, he married Lois Farlowe in High Point, N.C. Ralph served in C&MA ministry for more than 40 years, pastoring churches in Savannah, Ga.; Lumberton and Fayetteville, N.C.; Orlando, Fla.; and Albany, Ga. He also served as an administrator, church planter and director of church extension in the South Atlantic District for nine years. During his retirement, he was mayor of Interlachen, Fla., for 10 years. In addition, Ralph was involved with several community organizations, including the Lions Club and the American Legion. He was an excellent pianist and blessed many with his music. Ralph is survived by his wife; daughter Carole; and sons Philip, Andrew and Jonathon.

Elaine Ann Atkin Smith, May 2, 1944–December 26, 2011. Born in Binghamton, N.Y., Elaine met Terrance (Terry) Smith during junior high school. When Elaine was 16 and Terry was serving in the U.S. Air Force, they became engaged. They married on October 5, 1963, after Elaine had attended Rochester (N.Y.) Institute of Technology for one year. On December 16, 1966, in the midst of filing for divorce, Terry accepted Christ; 16 days later, Elaine received Jesus at Riverview Alliance Church in Amsterdam, N.Y. The couple trained for ministry at St. Paul Bible College (now Crown College, St. Bonifacius, Minn.) When Crown College relocated to St. Bonifacius in 1970, the Smiths returned to New York, where they enrolled in Nyack College and pastored the Tomkin’s Cove Alliance Church. In 1976, they moved to Mt. Vernon, N.Y., to build and pastor a new church. During 30 years of C&MA ministry, the Smiths pastored churches in Amherst, N.Y.; Mt. Pleasant, R.I.; Monroe, Mich.; and St. Petersburg, Fla. They retired in 2006 due to Terry’s heart condition. Elaine earned an associate’s degree in computer programming and attended classes at the University of Buffalo (N.Y.) and Central Michigan University (Mount Pleasant). She served as church secretary, taught Sunday school, was active in women’s ministries and had a stamp and card-making ministry. Elaine is survived by her husband; sons Christopher and Stephen; daughters Terriann and Tracy; 10 grandchildren; and 1 great grandchild.

Dorothea E. Irvine, June 9, 1913–January 9, 2012. Born in Fort Plain, N.Y., Dorothea accepted Christ during her teens. She enrolled in Albany (N.Y.) Bible School and then attended the Missionary Training Institute (now Nyack [N.Y.] College), where she met David M. Irvine. They married on June 3, 1939. After home service in Prestonsburg, Ky., David pastored C&MA churches in Danville, Ind.; Wardensville, W.Va.; Harrison, Ohio; Wheeling, W.Va.; and Oneida, N.Y. Also, he pastored Halsey Valley United Methodist Church in Spencer, N.Y. While serving alongside her husband, Dorothea prayed daily for her family, church and missionaries worldwide. A founding member of Chemung (N.Y.) Christian Fellowship, Dorothea also attended North Waverly Chapel and Athens Wesleyan Church. At North Waverly Chapel, she taught children’s church, ran a Bible memorization program and served as Missionary Committee chairperson. Dorothea was predeceased by her husband and sons Richard and John; she is survived by son David; daughters Betty and Barbara; 9 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren.
