Beginning in May, the Treasury will send economic stimulus payments to more than 130 million households. People eligible to receive a tax rebate must have a valid Social Security number and have earned at least $3,000 in 2007, including earned income, Social Security, Railroad Retirement and veteran's benefits. In order to receive the rebate, a 2007 federal tax return must be filed.
Millions of seniors, disabled veterans and low-income workers, who are not usually required to file a tax return, must do so this year if a rebate is to be received. Information from the 2007 tax return will allow the IRS to determine eligibility and to calculate the amount of payment.
If you file a tax return for 2007, you don't have to do anything to receive a rebate. Eligible individuals will receive between $300 and $600, while those filing jointly will receive between $600 and $1,200. Some with children will receive an additional $300 for each qualifying child. To qualify, a child must be eligible under the Child Tax Credit and have a valid Social Security number.
